VW Golf five-door

With this technology decision enabled Volkswagen, also significantly heavier models such as the VW Touran based on the platform of the Golf V to develop and moved so the same with Ford, where they had already built such, often favored by the press rear axle design in the Focus since 1998.

The Golf V could not build on the success of its predecessor in Germany: December 31, 2008 - ie at the end of the last year of production - were in Germany 786 554 Golf V approved. At the same time were from the previous model, which was already five years out of production, allowed almost twice as many vehicles with 1,558,955. VW's response consisted of a shortened life span of the Golf V, ie the model change to the Golf VI was rather brought than expected. Although the built from 2008 successor pointed to changes in the technical details and the optical design, but using the same platform and many are not externally visible parts, who had come to Golf V for use.

In the U.S., the model as a VW Rabbit was known.
