Model history

The Polo 86C was built a total of 13 years - almost as long as the predecessor and the successor 6N 86 together. Here, the Polo went through except the big facelift in October 1990, several small " face lift ". Vehicles for the German market except wear mostly the type designation 87C, which they retain to Germany also in the re - import.

Three examples of the models until the fall of 1990:

The first Polos were thin plastic chrome strips - if they who had - relatively far above the entire length of the vehicle. Later there were only plastic bumpers between the wheel arches at bumper height. The first Polos include the large steering wheels with thin bony rim. Over time, all Polos got smaller, thick umschäumte steering wheels. Also when reversing lights, a change was noted: The first models had a small light area with a red frame, while later models had a completely white glass diffuser.

1981-1990: Polo 86C

In October 1981, VW introduced the successor to the first generation Polo, which was initially only available as a hatchback. With a generous for this class luggage space can be increased by folding down the rear seats, can be even goods from the size of a washing machine transport without any problems.

At the beginning there was the Polo in the equipment versions C, CL and GL with the following engines:

In February 1982, the new version of the notchback variant Derby followed. The third body variant and thus additional Polo Coupe followed in August 1982. It differs from hatchback through a shallow sloping rear window and was designed from the outset rather sportiness. Therefore, the newly developed 1.3 -liter 55 kW engine was (75 PS) for the time being available for the Coupé in the new GT trim level, in addition there was the coupe as CL and GL. Even today, the coupe is the most popular body style all Polos.

In August 1983, a new 1.3 -liter 40 kW motor (54 hp) replaced the previous engines with 50 and 60 hp.

In August 1984, the upscale GL version fell away. In turn, the CL equipment was upgraded. The Polo coupe was available from now on, even with the 29 kW engine and the GT equipment was now available with the 40 kW motor. At the same time Volkswagen introduced a new car stereo generations alpha, beta and gamma.

From August 1985 you could order the city vans registered as trucks. For this you received a hatchback without rear seats, but with solid sides, loading bay panels and partition grille behind the front seats. Especially small craft or retailers should be addressed so. In addition, you could also order in the C equipment from now on the coupe.

In the same month, the 1.05 -liter 29 kW motor ( 40 hp ) was replaced by a new 1.05 -liter 33 kW motor (45 hp). It was also presented as the flagship Coupe GT G40.

In July 1986, VW introduced a 1.3 -liter diesel engine with 33 kW (45 PS) for the Polo. A month later, in August 1986, accounted for the equipment variant C.

As of August 1987 was limited for the Polo to three trim levels - Fox, CL and GT. The CL variant was slimmed down a bit, the GT was slightly enhanced. The Fox was created as a new base model from a former special model out. The 1.3 -liter 55 kW motor (75 hp) was now available for the hatchback.

The Polo sedan and the city vans were no longer available from August 1988 for the German market. 55 hp engines and a catalyst - The Department for 45. The 75 -horsepower engine moved to in the course of a complete revision in October 1989.

An appreciation of all models in August 1989. As a last change of the model program before the big face lift, an electric folding sunroof as optional equipment was available from April 1990.

As of August 1990, a new 1.4 -liter 35 kW diesel engine (48 hp) was installed.

With the Polo 86C one -make series in the motorsport under the name "International Wintershall VW Polo Cup" was held successor to the Golf GTI Cup from 1983 to 1989. In the years 1983 to 1985 polo coupe went with thanks to a Solex twin carburettor 88 hp increased 1.3 - liter engines at the start. From 1986 to 1989, the G40 engine ( engine code MM) and a regulated catalytic converter came with 112 hp is used, which accelerated 750 -pound coupe in 8.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km / hr. 1990-1994: Polo 86C " 2F"

In October 1990 there was a major facelift of the Polo. In the interior, a new more contemporary dashboard with more bins, higher -laid radio slot, knobs for heating and ventilation and newly designed instruments took place. In addition to the facelift, new steering wheels, fully clad doors and rear side walls, new pitman arm and the first time two front speakers shafts were used.

Outside the Polo has also been revised. The bumpers were large areas designed to make them less sensitive to small damage. The front end and the rear end have been redesigned, which caused a change in the side panels in the connection area to the rear of the vehicle. Larger angular headlights provide up to 50% more illumination of the road and larger tail lights for more active safety. The front turn signals were mounted with the 86C " 2F" next to the headlights so that they were visible from the side. The drag coefficient of the Polo 86C could be improved by 10 % in 1990. To this end, the rear window in hatchback and coupe was glued flush and the front of the car was completed.

The revised Polo there was again a city van, but in Germany and Austria as notchback. In Germany, only the German Telekom polo coupes with truck had approval. The telecom Polo had no welded- side windows, another cargo area than the hatchback, and the partition was not only up to head restraint height, but ended with the headliner from.

Therefore, it is very often referred to as Polo 2F ( facelift). The introduction of the Polo 86C 'successor Polo 6N ( or real Polo 3 ) was planned from VW earlier than in 1994, due to the enormous success of the Polo 2F but the plans were postponed several times. Especially various special models such as the Polo " Genesis" with a particularly sporty factory-fitted and special interior colors catered for the high sales figures. More attractive special models have included Polo Boulevard, Universal, Style, Scot and GT Extra.

In August 1991, the trim levels Fox, CL, GT & G40 were upgraded.

All Polo received reinforcements in the doors for protection against side impact and also automatic three-point belts on rear outboard seats and side repeaters.

Other equipment improvements were: Solid luggage compartment cover and front passenger sun visors with make -up mirror for the Polo Fox, inside adjustable mirrors for Fox and CL, side luggage compartment trim and three-spoke steering wheel for CL. From CL equipment, there is a bracket for first aid kit and warning triangle; GT in the driver's seat is height adjustable. In the Polo G40 fog lights, white turn signals front and partially darkened tail lights are fitted as standard, as well as the model received a leather on the steering wheel and gear lever. The electric folding roof was taken with model year 1992 ( AB August 1991 ) from the model program.

In July 1994, the last Polo 86C rolled off the assembly line. Successor was the Polo 6N.

Fox

In July 1984, Volkswagen brought the spartan special edition Fox on the market. It should appeal to customers who had chosen a beetle because of the low price until then. Tools such as clock, tripmeter, cigarette lighter, glove box door, locking gas cap and rigid parcel shelf ( this was designed as a fitted sheet ) has been omitted. With a stylish design and a younger clientele should be addressed.

From the outside, the Fox can be seen on Fox lettering, the colors turquoise blue or saimagrün and the matching painted steel wheels in white or saimagrün. Seats, door panels and fitted sheet were carried out in body color. Only deliverable extra factory was the brake booster. Even three -point seat belts for the rear seats were not even available at extra cost.

As of March 1986, the coupe as Fox was available. In the same year there was the Fox in the colors black, tornado, clouds gray and alpine white with matching colored plastic wheel covers.

As of August 1987, the Fox, the Polo range was rounded off as normal trim down.

Even after the major facelift in 1990, the low-end model Fox remained. The side markers were not fitted as standard.

When Polo III the equipment variant Fox was no longer offered. From 2005 to 2011, the name for a unique car, the VW Fox was used. This was positioned below the now much larger Polo IV.

G40

As the most powerful variant of the Polo Coupe ' G40 ' with 85 kW was ( 115 hp) at 6000 rpm and presented with a torque of 148 Nm at 3600 rpm based on the 1.3 -liter engine in August 1985. The extra power is built up by a scroll compressor ( G-Lader ), similar to the function of a compressor. The intake air is compressed by the belt-driven supercharger G, whereby more fuel may be injected, without the air fuel ratio stays. The G-Lader is not maintenance-free, contrary to the statements of the manufacturer. Depending on speed and mileage wear design reasons various components, which can lead to impaired function or even destruction of the G-Lader. However, the function of the G-Lader are often backed up to several hundred one thousand kilometers to go through regular moderate revisions with appropriate spare parts.

In developing a performance limit was determined. The stability of the series 5-speed transmission was of 150 Nm as a maximum, which could bring the motor to torque to the crankshaft, since the new development of a more powerful gear was prohibitively expensive. To bring the power to the road, internally ventilated disc brakes has the intercooled GT G40 on a customized, 30 /20 mm ( front / rear ) lowered suspension, front and tires on aluminum wheels in the dimension 175/60R13. Furthermore, the front axle was optimized by using UniBall - bearings on the wishbones and track rods.

In May 1987, for the first time left a special series of 500 black Polo Coupé GT G40 based on the " old" Polo 86C the workshops. He received a speedometer up to 240 km / h and tripmeter. The vehicle key number was 719 A year later, in 1500 vehicles were produced due to the large demand, of which 500 units were shipped to France. Available now, the coupe was also available in white, candy red, traffic purple, blue ( helios blue metallic) and black. In January 1991, the Polo G40 was, as he has since only then called, was added based on the Polo 2F to the regular model range. From then on, the car was initially at a price of DM 25.690, - in the dealer showrooms. The output shrank due to the catalyst of 85 kW ( 115 hp) to 83 kW (113 hp). Identification of the G40 were BBS alloy wheels in size 5 ½ x 13, round bumpers and fenders spreads, a roof antenna, red trim in the bumpers, G40 emblems in the grille and the tailgate, sports seats at Le Mans plaid design and a tachometer to 240 km / h As of August 1991, fog lamps and white indicator, partially darkened tail lights, and leather steering wheel and leather gear knob were also standard. The vehicle key number was 844
