Voltinism

Voltinism (Italian " volta ", time ',' rotation ') is a term used in Entomology ( Entomology ) and describes the number of completed annual generations of a kind

We distinguish:

  • Univoltine ( einbrütig ) with one generation per year (sometimes: monovoltin )
  • Bivoltin with two generations per year,
  • Trivoltin with three generations per year,
  • Polyvoltin or plurivoltin always with successive generations, for example, in areas with no seasons, or
  • Semivoltin: the completion of a generation takes longer than one year; the time required is not named.

Some authors reserve the term semivoltin for species with two years of development, for species with three years of development is also spoken by merovoltin. Occasionally this term for species with several years of development is used regardless of the number of years, or it can be summarized including all cycles over two years. For several generations a year without specifying the number (ie to bivoltin as an umbrella term, trivoltin etc. ) is sometimes used multivoltin.

The term is often used in the silk culture.
