Vox in excelso

Vox in excelso is the title of a Papal Bull, which was presented by Pope Clement V on March 22, 1312 at the Council of Vienne and adopted on 4 April 1312.

Subject

Already with the Bull Pastoralis praeminentie Pope Clement V had laid the foundation stone for the dissolution of the Knights Templar. The bull covered the Knights Templar, who had been charged with several offenses and prosecuted by the French King Philip IV. Since the Knights Templar Papal, and the judiciary was subject to the Pope, as well as convened for this purpose, Council of Vienne investigated the allegations. Regardless of the charges in detail allegations raised the Pope in this bull the Knights Templar, and forbade any activity toward a start-up, in particular the accession to, or use of the Habits of the Knights Templar. At the same time all previous papal bulls and instructions with respect to the Knights Templar were canceled.

Effect

The resistance of the Templars against his persecution in the Templar processes by the French crown was broken by this bull. For the former Templar knight could now only be a matter of saving their own lives. The Pope corresponded to the extent of the massive influence of the French crown. In this bull no judgment on the validity of the allegations was explicitly expressed.

Effectiveness

Some provisions of the bull Vox in Excelsio probably were not announced at the council, but should initially receive a revision. The early death of Clement V, the adoption was suspended until Pope John XXII. the Council further led.

Consequence bulls

After the dissolution of the Knights Templar, a number of other bulls was adopted mainly regulated the distribution of the assets of the Knights Templar:

  • Ad providam on May 2, 1312
  • Nuper in concilio on May 16, 1312

The accused persons were in the Bull Considerantes Dudum from May 6, 1312 sentenced.

With the cops Licet Dudum (18 December 1312), Dudum in generalized concilio (31 December 1312) and Licet pridem ( January 13, 1313 ), the distribution of the assets moved on down.
