W. Albert Hiltner

William Albert Hiltner ( born August 27, 1914 in North Creek, Ohio; † 30 September 1991 in Ann Arbor / Michigan ) was an American astronomer. His work on photoelectric photometry led to the discovery of interstellar polarization and gave the first indications of a galactic magnetic field. From 1968 to 1971 he was the president of the Associated Universities for Research in Astronomy. In 1970 he was appointed as a director of the University of Michigan and held this position until 1982. The 1985 installed Hiltner telescope of the MDM Observatory in Arizona is named after him.
