Wadbilliga-Nationalpark

The Wadbilliga National Park is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales, 425 km south of Sydney and 150 km south-east of Canberra. The nearest large towns are Cooma in the West, Narooma on the coast in the east and Bega in the south. Nearest town is Cobargo on the eastern edge of the park.

The park is a wilderness still in almost original condition. There are narrow valleys and wild ravines. The area is suitable for camping and hiking ( only for experienced, well-equipped hikers ). The main attractions are Tuross Falls ( waterfalls of the Tuross River), the Tuross River Gorge and the Brogo Wilderness Area with the Brogo River. The Wadbilliga track is a terrain slope for four-wheel drive vehicles, which leads over the rock steps from east to west up.

The area of Wadbilliga is a very remote part of Australia and has received little attention during the European colonization. In recent decades there has been a protected area and left intentionally in their natural state.

Flora

The undulating plateau and the steep canyons offer a variety of habitats. Pink Wood Rainforest ( Eucryphia moorei ) occurs in forest fire-protected canyons. Black Ash (Eucalyptus sieberi ), Monkey Gum (Eucalyptus cypellocarpa ) Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua ), White Ash (Eucalyptus fraxinoides ) and Snow Gum (Eucalyptus pauciflora ) occur at higher altitudes. Forests with Yellow Box (Eucalyptus Melliodora ), Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis ) and Forest Red Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis ) are found in the lower areas. Other habitats are bogs, dry, exposed, loose eucalyptus forest, riverine forests, swamps and heaths. Rare plants in Wadbilliga National Park are the Deua Gum (Eucalyptus wilcoxii ) and the small shrubs Kunzea sp. Wadbilliga.

Fauna

Even the animal and bird life in the area is relatively undisturbed. About 120 bird species have been recorded here. In addition, one finds wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, possums different, platypus, echidna and many others.
