Wajir County

Wajir County (until 2010 Wajir District ) is a county in the Kenyan province of North - Eastern. The capital of the county is Wajir. In County 2009 661.941 people lived on 55840.6 km ². The County is bordered on the north by Ethiopia. In the county there is an arid climate. The soil is mostly very rocky, in the north there are fertile loamy soil. 30 % of the area is arable. The people in Wajir County live mainly by nomadic livestock. Only 40% of the population has access to safe water sources, the average distance to be the next source is 15 km. In 2005 there were more than two -thirds of the population below the poverty line.

Transport and Infrastructure

The road network in the County is in a bad condition. Only 7 % of the roads are paved, many roads are impassable during the rainy season. Electricity is only available in the capital Wajir. The County decreed in 2002 over 45 phone booths, three post offices and 1 bank. Medical care in Wajir County is bad. The County decreed 2002 on one hospital, four clinics and 25 pharmacies. 70 km had to be completed on average at a medical care center. Almost 80 % of households had no access to medical care. In Wajir County it often comes to malaria and diarrhea epidemics. 2002 9.8% of the children died before their 5th birthday.

Structure

The county is divided into divisions. There are four electoral districts, Wajir North, Wajir West, Wajir East and Wajir South.
