Panayhornvogel ( Aceros waldeni )

The Panayhornvogel or coral -billed Hornbill ( Aceros waldeni ) is a species of bird in the family of hornbills ( Bucerotidae ). The species is endemic to the Philippines and threatened by habitat destruction and direct readjustment of extinction. The total population of the species was in 1998 estimated at 60-80 breeding pairs.

Appearance

The Panayhornvogel is a medium sized, relatively colorful member of its family. The male has a yellow face, a yellow throat pouch, a red-brown head and a bright red beak with a low horn, which is about 2/3 of the beak pulls. The rest of the body is uniformly black, but the tail has a broad, cream-colored binding. The female differs from the male by the black head and neck plumage; also the yellow in the male body parts in the female are turquoise blue. The Panayhornvogel is 1 to 1.5 kg and have a body length of 60 to 65 cm.

Voice

The call is described as a loud, deep, short and cackling trills, repeated.

Distribution and habitat

The Panayhornvogel lives only in the Western Visayas (Philippines): Panay, Negros and Guimaras; on the latter he is already extinct. He lived there the tropical rainforest in 300 to 1200 m above sea level. The species breeds in large tree cavities.

Food

The bird feeds on figs and other fruits.

Inventory and threat

The Panayhornvogel is in the IUCN Red List as " Critically Endangered " ( threatened with extinction ) classified because its population is still very small and highly fragmented. The total stock in 1998 estimated at 60 to 80 breeding pairs, of which 2/3 lived on Panay. The main causes of decline are habitat destruction and direct reenactments. The continuing destruction of forests has led to the forested in 1988 were only about 4 % of the area of the island of Negros and 8 % of the area of Panay.
