Walter Dieckmann

Walter Dieckmann ( born October 8, 1869 in Hamburg, † January 12, 1925 in Munich) was a German chemist and associate professor.

Life

The son of a merchant, he studied at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg, the Technical College of Charlottenburg (today the Technical University of Berlin) and at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich chemistry. Dieckmann received his doctorate in Munich as an academic student of Eugen Bamberger, after he was private assistant to Adolf von Baeyer and then worked at the Baden Aniline and Soda Factory (now BASF SE). In 1894 he returned to the University of Munich back and habilitated in 1898. Diekmann was associate professor at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

Work

In the post-doctoral phase Dieckmann discovered named after him Dieckmann condensation, intramolecular ester condensation, similar to the ( intermolecular ) Claisen condensation. The Dieckmann condensation later found wide application in the synthesis of polycyclic and macrocyclic compounds.
