Walter Franz

Walter Franz ( born April 8, 1911 in Munich, † February 16, 1992 in Münster ) was a German physicist.

Franz in 1932 his PhD at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich under Arnold Sommerfeld on " Compton effect on the bound electron". He habilitated at the University of Königsberg in 1939 and received a diet lectureship at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, he was appointed at the same location in 1949 as an adjunct professor. In 1959, Walter Francis to the Chair of Theoretical Physics at the University of Hamburg. Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität could win him back in 1962 as a successor to the Sommerfeld - pupil Adolf scratches to the chair of theoretical physics in Münster.

In his scientific researches Franz dealt with questions about creeping waves in the diffraction theory for multipole radiation of atomic nuclei and the quantum theory of solids. Become especially well known for its known as Franz- Keldysh effect become work on the amendment of the fundamental absorption of a semiconductor in the presence of an electric field.
