Walter Glechner

Walter " Bubi " Glechner ( born February 12, 1939) is a former Austrian football player. The long-time captain of the SK Rapid Wien took the club four league titles and played in the Austrian national team.

Club career

Glechner began as a ten- year-old in Rapid offspring among the youth coach Franz Wagner. His championship debut for the first team he gave in April 1959, when he replaced the injured Ernst Happel and soon became his successor at the stopper position. Already in his first full season 1959/60 Rapid could bring the championship title, the defensive line with Paul Halla, Glechner and Joseph Höltl allowed the fewest goals in the league. In the following season, the association played in the European Cup, where they penetrated to the semi-finals and there was denied by the subsequent competition winners Benfica. 1964 was followed by another title.

A broken leg in April 1965 interrupted the career of now the team captain ascended defense chief, who was also known as a master of the offside trap, almost a year. 1970 Rapid committed with Gerd Springer a new coach, who deported the former captain in the reserve team. After a year without significant stakes Glechner therefore left his hometown club and signed for second division side SV Admira Wiener Neustadt. In the first year the club was able to achieve promotion to the top division, where the crew to the Rudolf Flögel, Alfons and Karl Fröhlich Dirnberger were three other former national player, but knocked off finished last. Glechner remained after relegation for another year at the club and then finished his career at Cottage Krems.

National

Glechner belonged to his club colleague Walter Skocik that Austrian youth team that could win the 1957 UEFA youth tournament. His debut in the senior team, he was under team boss Karl Decker in May 1960, a 4-1 win against Scotland. A regular place he could initially not secure, because as a stopper usually the experienced Karl Stotz was used, from the end of 1962, however Glechner was an integral part of the national team.
