Walter Hand House

The Walter Hand House - now known as Shadow Mountain Farm - is the main building of a former farm at Angola Road in Cornwall, New York in the United States. It was built around 1870 and originally served as a farmhouse and a summer board, as Cornwall enjoyed great popularity as a residence for the summer at that time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places ( NRHP) in 1996.

Description

The house is located on a hill facing west on the Schunemunk Mountain. The plot is the residue of an originally much larger farm, which has been divided ever since. The property includes six additional buildings that are all considered to be contributing.

The house is a two and a half storey building with verschindeltes Gothic ornaments, a molded cornice and a plain frieze on the eaves. The gable roof is covered with wood shingles, located at both ends of the ridge there is a brick masonry fireplace. On the southern side there is a two-storey wing.

A one-story porch runs the entire length of the east façade and is sheltered by a flat roof, the characteristics such as cornice and frieze are designed similar to the eaves of the house itself is a decorated with jigsaws work railing between the posts.

Inside the outline is aligned with the centrally arranged hall. Much of the interior decoration and ornaments is original. The attic, which is used for the accommodation of summer guests, is fully expanded.

The six outbuildings, which originated around the same time as the main house, located slightly downhill on the back. These are smaller two storey stables, a former kitchen house, which was later converted for residential purposes, a coach house with original doors and equipment, and a shed.

History

The house was built in around 1870 by Walter hand. This was an old-established Cornish family. Hand built to apples and responded to the growing interest of New York to spend the summer in the country, with the removal of the attic to accommodate such guests can.

Since that time, the owner has changed several times. More recently, it was purchased by the owners of Cromwell Manor, the approximately two kilometers to the east located on the Angola Road. These manage the property as a Bed and Breakfast.
