Walter Simon (sinologist)

Ernst Julius Walter Simon ( born June 10, 1893 in Berlin, † February 22, 1981 in London ) was a German philologist and author. He taught at various universities, its main field of activity was in addition to the Chinese Studies, Tibetology.

Life

Walter Simon studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1911 to 1914 Romanesque and classical languages. In 1922 he made ​​a librarian exam and received his doctorate with a dissertation on the Jews - Spanish dialect of Thessaloniki. He was employed as a lecturer at the University of Berlin and in 1937 was dismissed as a Jew.

In 1937 he emigrated to London. After several guest professorships at various universities he taught from 1947 to 1960 Sinology at the University of London. Simon was a member of the British Academy. 1961 him the Order of the British Empire ( Commander) was awarded.
