Walter Veltroni

Walter Veltroni ( born July 3, 1955 in Rome ) is an Italian politician and journalist. From 2001 to 2008 he was mayor of Rome. From October 2007 to February 2009, he was chairman of the largest center-left Party of Italy, the Partito Democratico (PD ), and was present at the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2008 leading candidate.

Family

Walter Veltroni is the son of Vittorio Veltroni, who was editor of RAI in the 1940s, and in 1956 died when Walter was a year old. His mother Ivanka Kotnik was the daughter of Cyril Kotnik, the Ambassador of the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia to the Holy See, who helped after the armistice in 1943 ( and the fall of Mussolini ) many Roman Jews to escape persecution by the German occupiers.

Political career

Veltroni was a Roman town council of 1976 until 1981. Since 1987 he is member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the Italian Communist Party or its successor parties of the Left and Democrats of Partito Democratico. From 1992 to 1996 he was editor of the leftist daily L' Unità. In the first cabinet of Romano Prodi, he was from 1996 to 1998, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of Culture. From 1999 to 2004 he sat as a member of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament.

He was elected mayor of Rome and confirmed in 2006 with over 60 % of the vote in office 2001. In 2007 he sat in this function for new investigations into the murder of a Pasolini. On 13 February 2008, he resigned from the mayor's office.

As co-founder of the Partito Democratico he was elected on 14 October 2007 in a base vote of all party supporters ( primarie ) with 75.7 % of votes as its Chairman ( Segretario ). In the parliamentary elections on 13 and 14 April 2008 Veltroni entered as the top candidate of the new, oriented towards the center party.

One day after the swearing in of the Berlusconi government, on 9 May 2008, Walter Veltroni presented his shadow cabinet. On February 24, 2009, it was dissolved.

After a defeat of his party in the regional elections on 15 and 16 February 2009 in so far ruled by the center-left coalition Region of Sardinia Veltroni announced his resignation as party leader.

2010 his first novel was published under the title The discovery of the sunrise in German.
