Walter Weldon

Walter Weldon ( born October 31, 1832 in Loughborough, † September 20, 1885 in Burstow ), was an English chemist and journalist and publicist. His second son was Walter Frank Raphael Weldon, an English zoologist and biostatistician.

Life and work

Walter Weldon developed a method to convert the produced during the manufacturing chlorine from hydrogen chloride and manganese dioxide manganese (II ) chloride back in brown stone. Named after him Weldon procedure was only replaced by the Deacon process and later through the electrolytic production of chlorine by chlorine -alkali electrolysis.

In 1854 he began as a journalist in London at The Dial, which was taken over by The Morningstar later. In 1860 he edited the monthly magazine Weldon 's Register of Facts and Occurrences Relating to Literature, the Sciences and the Arts. He also published the magazines Weldon 's Fashion Journal, Weldon 's Patterns and Weldon 's Household Encyclopaedia. He also published in the late 1800s knitting instructions about Weldon & Company. To Weldon 's Practical Needlework appeared in 1888 and Weldon 's Ladies ' Journal ( 1875-1954 ).

Weldon process

Manganese dioxide in the first step reacts with hydrochloric acid to chlorine evolution to manganese (II ) chloride:

The resulting manganese ( II) chloride is added to lime water and the presence of air occurs Calciummanganit which can be recycled back into the process:

The resulting Calciummanganit reacts with HCl as follows:

The MnCl2 can be recycled while the CaCl 2 is obtained as a by-product and must be disposed of.
