Wan Azizah Wan Ismail

Wan Azizah Wan Ismail ( born December 3, 1952) is a Malaysian politician and doctor.

Ismail first attended the St. Nicholas Convent School in Alor Setar. Then she was in Seremban at Tunku Kurshiah College. After leaving school, she studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, where she graduated. She returned to Malaysia and spent 14 years working as a doctor in government service. In the wake of the political ascension of her husband she became involved in political lobbying. Ismail is the wife of the Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim.

After the arrest of her husband on September 20, 1998, due to alleged corruption and homosexual acts, she became the leader of the reform movement Reformasi. Her husband was convicted and had to begin a sentence. She led the ADIL, a civil rights organization, and helped the opposition National Justice Party to start on April 4, 1999, its first chairman was elected. She was elected to Parliament in Malaysia as a Member in 1999. On 3 August 2003, the National Justice Party Party merged with the Parti Rakyat Malaysia and there was the Parti Keadilan Rakyat opposition party.

Ismail is currently the chairman of the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat. From 1999 to 2008 she was elected Members of Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat for the city Permatang Pauh, Penang. On 31 July 2008 she gave back her seat in parliament to allow her now again released from prison by a husband re-election to the collection as representative to the Parliament. The victory of her husband Anwar Ibrahim succeeded in the elections on 26 September 2008, and he is elected Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh the city.
