Wardialing

War Dialing ( English: war dialing ) was called using a modem with the purpose to call every possible phone in a local network to find in the hope of a computer in which can penetrate through password guessing.

The name of this technique refers to the movie WarGames in 1983. Therein the protagonist programmed his computer, each terminal in Sunnyvale (California ) to call.

Although there was this method before the movie, the name " War Dialing " quickly became popular in the computer culture.

A more recent phenomenon is wardriving, search for WLANs with a vehicle.

Similar to the War Dialing are port scans in the TCP / IP protocol, which every TCP port query any IP address to find out which services are available. In contrast to the War Dialing however port scans do not represent harassing people dar.
