Warren Strelow

Warren Strelow ( born January 22, 1934 in St. Paul, Minnesota, † April 11, 2007 in Worcester, Massachusetts) was an American professional ice hockey goaltender and goalie coach. During his career he worked for the Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League, as well as for the U.S. National Ice Hockey Team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and 2002 in Salt Lake City.

Career

Strelow first played as a player in the season 1959/60 for the Minneapolis Millers and Des -Moines Ice Hawks in the Central Hockey League. He decided, however, early to begin a coaching career.

His coaching career started the Americans at Concordia Academy in his native St. Paul as coach of the American football, ice hockey and baseball selection team. It was followed by two seasons at the Breck School as a hockey coach. Then Strelow went to Mahtomedi High School, where he again took care of the hockey and baseball - team selection. In addition, he taught there for 18 years social studies and English. From 1974 to 1983 Strelow worked as goalkeeper coach at the University of Minnesota, who won in this time three NCAA Division I National Championships and finished second twice were. During his time at the University of Minnesota he scouted over eight years, young players. First four years for teams in the World Hockey Association and four for the Central Scouting department of the National Hockey League after.

Through his many years as a goalkeeper coach Strelow was added to the coaching staff of the U.S. National Hockey Team for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and eventually won as a member of the team the gold medal. Jim Craig, keeper of the national team and coached by Strelow, this was one of the key players to the surprising victory against the favored Soviet team, known as the Miracle on Ice, and later winning the gold medal.

For the season 1983/84 the Americans began an engagement with the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League and became the first full-time goalie coach in the history of the league. Strelow worked until 1989 at the Brussels residents. After a year break, he worked for three years, from 1990 to 1993 with the New Jersey Devils, where he trained, among others, Martin Brodeur. From 1997 to Strelow coached the goalkeepers in the San Jose Sharks. Even a kidney transplant carried out in 2004 and 2007 suffered a minor stroke did not stop him from executing further from his work, and even on the farm team of the San Jose Sharks, the Worcester Sharks extend.

In January 2001, he was, for the first time after 1980, named by the U.S. Ice Hockey Federation USA Hockey to the goalkeeper coach for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. There, the team won the silver medal.

Strelow died on 11 April 2007 in Worcester, Massachusetts, on the day when the San Jose Sharks took off in the playoffs of the 2006/07 season. In his honor, carried the players during the playoff games a patch with the initials " WAS" on their shirts.
