Province

Wartburg is a place in the Midlands, the South African province of KwaZulu -Natal. It is located in the municipality in the district uMshwathi uMgungundlovu.

Wartburg was founded in the mid 19th century by German settlers from the area around Hanover. In 2011 the town had 906 inhabitants. A majority of them are descendants of immigrants and speak sometimes still German. Of the German settlers also the two Lutheran churches in the town were built. The name of the town comes from the German Wartburg in Eisenach. Martin Luther translated the Bible there. The emblem of the Wartburg Luther Rose is seen.

In Wartburger yard, a hotel and restaurant, German food and home-brewed beer is served. There is also the Wartburg Kirchdorf School, a school of German origin, in which is also today still partially taught in German.

Apart from tourism to agriculture to the economy of Wartburg is important. It is mainly grown corn, sugar cane, wood industry and kiwi.

Wartburg is located about 30 kilometers northeast of Pietermaritzburg to a height of 881 meters above the sea level.
