Wat Ratchabophit

Wat Ratchabophit (full name Wat Ratchabophit Sathit - Mahasimaram Ratcha Wora Maha Viharn - Thai: วัดราชบพิธสถิตมหาสีมารามราชวรวิหาร) is a Buddhist temple ( Wat ) in Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Wat Ratchabophit is a " Royal Temple First Class ".

History

Ratchabophit Wat was built by King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ) in 1869, its construction was about 20 years. Then the king monks of the Order Thammayut invited to settle here. Later Wat Ratchabophit was the residence of the Prince - Patriarch Somdet Phrasangkharatchao Krommaluang Chinaworasiriwat ( Thai: สมเด็จพระสังฆราช เจ้า กรม หลวง ชิน วร สิริ วั ฒ น์ ), a monument next to the Phra Viharn in the form of a Prang is dedicated to him.

Construction

The ground plan of the temple Phra Pathom Chedi is reminiscent of the Nakhon Pathom in: a central chedi is surrounded by a circular gallery ( Phra Rabieng ). At the four cardinal directions, the gallery is in each case of a building is interrupted, the east and west of the so-called Viharn Thit, portal-shaped passages that form the entrance to the interior of the gallery, in the south of the " Phra Viharn " and in the north by the " Phra ubosot ".   • Phra Chedi ( Thai: พระ เจดีย์ ) - the bell-shaped chedi in " Sri Lankan Style " is covered with orange tiles. The tip forms a golden ball, in which a relic of the Buddha to reside. Inside the chedi a stone Buddha statue in Lopburi style that represents the "Buddha protected by a Naga ." In the round base of the chedi 16 niches are embedded with Buddha statues in different poses.
  • Phra ubosot ( Thai: พระ อุโบสถ ) - inside the Phra ubosot is held in gilt Italian Gothic, the ideas to this embodiment, the king brought back from his visits to Europe. The three -meter wing of the entrance doors are decorated with mother of pearl inlays. They represent the various Thai medals and decorations, including the Order of the Crown of Thailand, the Order of the White Elephant, the Order of Chula Chom Klao, the Order of the House of Chakri and the Order of the Nine Gems.
  • Drum Tower (Hor Klong - Thai: หอก ลอง ) and bell tower (Hor Rakhang - Thai: หอ ระฆัง ) - both are located west and east of the Phra Viharn arranged symmetrically. The two-story buildings have a conical tip. They are richly decorated with old Bencharong ceramics, Nagas and Erawan heads.
  • Changing pavilion - in the northeast of Putthawat ( Thai: เข ถ พุทธาวาส ), the " Sanctuaries ", a small pavilion is built into the wall, on the outside of a " elephant - stop" is.   • In Sanghawat ( Thai: เข ถ สังฆ วา ส ), the separated living quarters of the monks, numerous Buddha statues of various styles are set up.   • Royal Cemetery - the western part of Wat Ratchabophit is from a Royal Cemetery ( Thai: สุสาน หลวง ) taken. Here members of the royal family were buried, such as the Princess Galyani Vadhana, but also members of deserving families, such as the Bunnags.
