Watson Washburn

Watson " Watty " McLean Washburn ( born June 13, 1894 in New York; † December 2, 1973 ) was an American tennis player.

Biography

Washburn studied at Harvard University. In Intercollegiate Championship he won in 1913 in doubles.

During World War II he served the United States Army.

1921 Washburn won with the U.S. national team's Davis Cup.

The American Tennis Championships 1921 he managed together with Richard Williams a place in the finals of the doubles competition, but they lost their countrymen Vincent Richards and Bill Tilden in three sets 11:13, 10:13 and 1:6. In 1923 she lost to Brian Norton and Bill Tilden in five sets 6:3, 2:6, 3:6, 7:5 and 2:6.

In 1924, the two Frank Hunter and Vincent Richards stood facing the doubles final of Wimbledon. They were beaten in five sets 3:6, 6:2, 10:8, 6:8 and 3:6.

In 1940, Washburn American champion in singles for over 45 -year-old and a double in the years 1940, 1942 and 1944.

He was uncle of the Wimbledon winner Sidney Wood.

Washburn was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1965.
