Waveform

As a waveform, in German also waveform graph of an audio or other electrical signal is called. A waveform represents the time profile of an oscillation graphically and it is also complex, superimposed oscillations inter alia radio frequency ( in an audio signal is proportional to the pitch) and amplitude (if an audio signal is proportional to the volume) to estimate and to compare.

Waveforms are central elements in the graphical user interfaces of audio editors as well as other music software, such as software samplers or DJ programs.

In a figurative sense, the term is also used for other wave-like graphs such as the spectrogram of an electronic or digital spectrum analyzer.

Periodic waveforms

Basic periodic waveforms are:

  • Sinusoid
  • Square wave
  • Triangle wave, see triangular function
  • Wagging or sawtooth wave
