We Built This City is a song by the group Starship from 1985, which was written by Bernie Taupin, Peter Wolf, Martin Page and Dennis Lambert. It appeared on the album Knee Deep in the Hoopla.

History

We Built This City was released on August 30, 1985, and became a worldwide number -one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada.

The song was sung by the members of Starship Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas, the rap verse during the penultimate Breaks spoken by Les Garland. In Rap a traffic accident on the George Washington Bridge is described. The line Marconi plays the Mamba alludes to the ( alleged) inventor of radio. The meaning of the passage is disputed.

In an interview at a radio station with Grace Slick was reported that the song was written in the 1970s. Originally known as Title The City in the Bay, The City That Rocks and The City That Never Sleeps were provided.

It was elected in April 2004 by Blender magazine in the list of " worst songs of all time " at No. 1. In the episode of Drawn Together Afterschool Special and The Muppets could hear the song.
