Action

Living in New England high school teacher Jack Linden and Hank Evans are friends; both are married. Evans dreaming of a career as a writer. The couples spend a lot of time together. Edith Evans feels neglected and begins an affair with Jack. This is betrayed by Terry with Hank.

Reviews

Claudia Puig wrote in USA Today of 12 August 2004, the film was a " revelation." He was one of the few American films that would not be afraid to explore the emotional cruelty. Puig praised the " strong performances " of the four main characters, especially those of Laura Dern.

Awards

Larry Gross received in 2004 the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival; John Curran was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. John Curran was also nominated in 2004 for a price of Deauville Film Festivals; Laura Dern was awarded the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress. Maryse Alberti was nominated in 2005 for the Independent Spirit Award.
