Web (web browser)

Epiphany is a free web browser. He emerged from Galeon and today the official browser of the Gnome project.

Epiphany is released under the GNU GPL. Since 2009 he has used for the representation of Web pages WebKit, the rendering engine of Safari and other browsers.

Goal of the developers is to create a browser with a simple user interface possible, adheres to the Human Interface Guidelines (HIG ) of the GNOME project, is integrated into the GNOME desktop environment and complies with the relevant standards.

Special

Just as Galeon and most other browser Epiphany tabbed browsing, cookie management, and has a pop-up blockers.

From Galeon also the concept of Smart Bookmarks was taken. Smart bookmarks are tags that get an argument from a text box or from the address bar and integrate them into the requested URL. This allows the user, for example, use the search function of a site without having to load them first.

The most conspicuous feature of Epiphany is the organization of bookmarks ( bookmarks). In contrast to most other browsers, organize the bookmarks on hierarchies, bookmarks are assigned in Epiphany topics ( topics). In this case, the bookmark can be assigned any number of topics. When you enter in the address bar then both the bookmarks are displayed, their titles or URLs start with the letters entered, as well as bookmarks, begin their assigned topics typing.

Similar to Firefox Epiphany supports extensions ( Extensions), which, for example, a controller with mouse gestures is made possible.

For frequently used websites to application launcher can be created. Thus, the sites can be accessed like normal desktop applications. Such a page is in a separate window, without the controls of the browser starts.

History

Epiphany was originally created in 2002 as a spin-off of the Galeon project. On September 9, 2003 brought version 1.0. Since Gnome 2.4 (11 September 2003) Epiphany is the official web browser of the GNOME project. On 22 October 2005, announced that Galeon is no longer being developed, but its specific characteristics are taken as extensions in Epiphany.

Since version 2.19.6 ( 30 July 2007) Epiphany offered experimental support for WebKit rendering engine as Mozilla's Gecko except. In April 2008, the developer of Epiphany decided not to rely on WebKit. They justify this step with the more structured, stable programming and shorter release cycles of WebKit (as Mozilla's XULRunner / Gecko ). In the transition phase from version 2.19.6 to 2.28 below both rendering engines were usable. As of 21 September 2009 ( 2:28 version ) is the only Webkit rendering engine used.

Together with GNOME 3 released the developer on April 6, 2011, version 3.0. The user interface has been revised since then and uses GTK 3 in the following versions of the browser was further integrated into the GNOME Shell. Since 28 March 2012 ( version 3.4), the browser within the desktop environment are all referred to the web browser.
