Weberwiese (Berlin U-Bahn)

The metro station is a station Weberwiese the U5 of the Berlin U- Bahn. It is located on Karl- Marx -Allee and went on 21 December 1930 under the name Memel Street - by the city of Memel (now Klaipėda) - in operation. Although the nearest train station is on the line Frankfurter Tor, the historical city gate was at the point where today Weberwiese station.

History

The architect of the station was Alfred Grenander, who also designed the other stations of the former line E of Alexanderplatz to Friedrichsfelde the time of construction. The station Memel Street forms the standard type of stations. It is located in one and a half times the depth and has a staircase to the Karl -Marx -Allee at both ends. The platform itself was a simple middle row of columns. Apart from the length of the sunrises so was an almost symmetrical shape, to which orient the other stations. The characteristic color of the station is yellow.

During an air raid on February 26, 1945 several bombs slammed into the station. Here, about 200 people died. The station was destroyed.

With recognition of the Oder -Neisse Line as the eastern border of the newly founded in 1949 GDR in 1950 renamed Marchlewskistraße, after the politician Julian Balthasar Marchlewskistraße ( 1866-1925 ), the co-founder of the Polish Socialist Party. After German reunification took place in 1992 another name change, this time in the present name Weberwiese, after the homonymous square south of the Karl -Marx -Allee. Mid-1990s were formerly attached wall tiles gradually from the walls and the original name of Memel road was visible again. When renovating these last traces of memory were repaid.

2003 the comprehensive rehabilitation of the section Alexanderplatz - Frankfurter Allee. In addition to the superstructure of the track and the stations were extensively renovated and the old tiles replaced by new enameled steel plates. Likewise, the old asphalt surface of the platform was replaced by granite slabs. The rehabilitation of the sunrises was conducted two years later. The Weberwiese station was at the opening of the line as the default type for the stations on the nearly seven -kilometer route. Meanwhile, the station is moved away by the remedial measures of this ideal, so that the U -Bahn station Samaritan as the only road along the route now has the original structure from 1930, and thus - in contrast to station Weberwiese - is a listed building.

Because of time not existing above-ground bus routes that could make an accessible supply of its surroundings, the metro stations at the Karl -Marx -Allee and Frankfurter Allee are presently preferred in the design of lifts. The elevator was put into operation on November 4, 2011.

Connection

The underground station is served next to the U5 and from the bus line 347 to the Berlin public transport. The bus stop is not directly at the underground station but in a parallel street of Karl -Marx -Allee.
