WeeChat

WeeChat (Wee Enhanced Environment for Chat ) is a free IRC client with no graphical user interface, a character-based curses based user interface is used instead.

Due to the modular design WeeChat is extensible through scripts and numerous plugins available in its functionality.

Apart from the necessary functionality of a current IRC client WeeChat offers additional features like:

  • Support for IPv6
  • Buffer can be searched by gradual texts
  • A spelling correction ( GNU_Aspell, Enchant )
  • Support scripting ( Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua, Tcl, Scheme)
  • Support for multiple character encodings
  • Passwords can be stored in a separate file ( encrypted)
  • Proxy support
  • Built-in IRC proxy ( through Relay plugin )
  • SSL certificates are supported
  • SASL authentication
  • Capable of displaying 256 colors ( for example, for Nicks )
  • Mouse and cursor support
  • FIFO pipe
