Weldra

Weldra is a white grape variety. The new variety was introduced by Professor Christiaan Johannes Orffer. It is a cross of varieties Chenin Blanc and Trebbiano Toscano ( Ugni Blanc also called ). In South Africa, about 100 acres planted with this variety (as of 2001).

The yielding variety Weldra bred for warm climates with intensive irrigation and the associated necessary rot resistance. These conditions are common in South Africa. It also shows good resistance to the fungal disease powdery mildew. However, it provides neutral wines with high acidity. The white wines are therefore often used for distillation.

The variety Weldra is related to the variety Chenel because they were bred from the same parents mating.
