Welega Province

Wollega (or Welega, Amharic ወለጋ wälläga ) was a traditional province in the western part of Ethiopia, with its capital at Nekemte.

The province was named after the Welega - Oromo, which constituted the majority of the population within its borders.

Welega was the west by the Anglo -Egyptian Sudan and the north by the Abbay River, which is at the same time separating it from the province Gojjam is delimited. In the east, the province of Shewa was, in the southeast was the province of Kaffa in the south and the province Illubabor.

History

After the liberation of Ethiopia from the Italian occupation forces in Italian East Africa in 1941, the Second World War the following provinces of the province Welega were assigned to simplify administration: the semi -autonomous areas Asosa, Beni Shangul, Leqa Nekemte and Leqa Kellam, and the province of Sibu.

The limits of Welega remained unchanged until the adoption of the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1995, as Welega was further subdivided. Parts of its territory were to Asosa zone and Kamashi zone of Benishangul Gumuz region. The rest became part of the mirab - Welega zone, the Misraq - Welega zone and Illubabor zone of Oromia region.
