Welf II, Duke of Bavaria

Welf V. (* probably in 1073; † September 24, 1120 at Castle Ring Buy ) was the eldest son of the Duke Welf IV ( Welf I of Bavaria ) and Judith of Flanders. After the death of his father on the crusade of 1101, he was himself as Welf II Duke of Bavaria.

To strengthen the opposition against Emperor Henry IV mediated Pope Urban II to 1089 the marriage of about 16 years of Welf with the more than 40 -year-old Matilda of Tuscany, the mistress of Canossa - a marriage that was plagued by Mathilde their possessions had already been appropriated to the Pope. In the summer of 1095 separated Welf V of her, he and his father Welf IV became reconciled with the emperor. In their follow- Welf IV was reinstated in the Duchy of Bavaria, and Welf V. followed a few years later.
