Well-field system

The well field system (Chinese井田制度, Pinyin Jǐngtián Zhidu ) derived from the Chinese character for well (井jǐng ) was a method in classical China to cultivate the fields jointly. The beginning of a social farming economy, it consisted of the division of the arable land in nine fields, each to one hundred mu ( 675.68 Ar). Of these fields, which are located in three rows of three fields, the outer eight are intended for the people, the central area in the center for the government. This concept was represented by the philosopher Mencius: A square ( jing经) consists of 900 Mu亩. Eight families own 100 Mu and cultivate together the public field.
