Wellesley (TTC)

Wellesley is an underground subway station in Toronto. It lies on the Yonge- University - Spadina line of the Toronto Subway, at the intersection of Yonge Street and Wellesley Street. The station is used daily by an average of 23,120 passengers (2009 /10).

The station has side platforms, and is the only one in the city center with only one exit. It offers connecting flights to two bus lines. The opening of the station on 30 March 1954 together with the portion Union - Eglinton Yonge Subway, the first subway on Canadian soil. It was originally planned to build the southern portion of the Bloor- Yonge station in a cutting; Wellesley would thus come to lie directly at the tunnel portal. Since this would have required the expropriation of many land south of Bloor Street, the choice ultimately fell on a continuous tunnel.
