Wendell P. Kay

Wendell Kay Palmer ( born August 17, 1913 in Illinois; † 29 June 1986) was an American politician (Democratic Party).

Career

Kay, a lawyer, was from 1951 to 1956 a member of the House of Representatives in the Alaska Territory. There he represented the third district, and was during his last term in office ( 1955-1956 ), the Speaker of the House. He was also in 1956 during the Democratic National Convention a deputy delegate of the Alaska Territory, as well as a full delegate of the State of Alaska at the 1960 Convention.

After U.S. Senator Bob Bartlett, a Democrat, in 1968 had died in office, appointed by the Republican governor Walter Hickel Republican Ted Stevens to succeed. Therefore, a by-election for Bartlett's remaining term of office was held in 1970. Kay stood as candidate against Stevens and was defeated with 59.6% against 40.4 %. Ted Stevens held this seat until 2009.
