Wendy Beckett

Sister Wendy Beckett ( born February 25, 1930) is a South African-born, living in consecrated virginity British hermit who became in the 1990s by an acclaimed documentary series of the BBC art history fame.

Life

Wendy Beckett was born in South Africa and grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, on. In 1946 she joined the Order of the School Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in order to become a nun. The Order sent at the beginning of her novitiate to England, where she started at St Anne 's College, Oxford with the study, from which she graduated with a Bachelor with honors in English literature. Outside of her academic work, she lived in a monastery, which adhered strictly to a vow of silence.

Your training as a teacher at a college in Liverpool she graduated in 1954 with a diploma. She then returned to South Africa to teach at Notre Dame Convent in Constantia, Cape Town, girls in English and Latin. When the monastery was closed in 1967, she moved to Johannesburg to hold at Witwatersrand University lectures. Health problems forced in 1970 to abandon their teaching and to return to England, where she lived in a Carmelite convent. For several years she translated high medieval Latin manuscripts before 1980 her favorite subject, the art was dedicated to.

After she received the 1970 papal permission to live as a consecrated virgin, allowed her the Order, henceforth under the protection of the Carmelite nuns in their convent in Quidenham (Norfolk ), the East of England to lead a Eremitinnenleben.
