Wern Valley Railway

The Wern Valley Railway is a single-track electrified main line in Lower Franconia, mainly on freight traffic currently. It runs Werntal of Waigolshausen on Arnstein Gemünden am Main.

History

On 1 July 1854, the route Schweinfurt and Würzburg was taken as part piece Ludwigs- west railway in operation, which was extended in the same year to Aschaffenburg. Despite the detour, which was necessary for the connection of Würzburg, this route was given precedence over the direct leadership by the Werntal, which was opened on May 15, 1879. The track had its importance, especially in the regional freight and passenger traffic. The latter, however, took in the second half of the 20th century more and more from all, he was completely set by 30 May 1976. In freight transport, the Wern Valley Railway, however, has never lost its importance. As a bypass path of the node Würzburg she is still busy. For this reason it was established in 1971 jointly with the railway line Bamberg Waigolshausen electrified (the distance Waigolshausen - rotting village was converted to electric operation for the summer timetable 1972) and in 2002 renovated and extensively modernized. Meanwhile, there are also efforts to accommodate the passenger again, so wrong, for example, in the summer on the weekends a cycle on from Aschaffenburg to Bamberg on the Wern Valley Railway, but there without stopping. In addition, the Erfurt Rail uses the route for empty runs. On weekdays morning drives the arrived in Gemünden EB 80702 and on weekends the EB 80788 around midnight on the Wern Valley Railway to Schweinfurt.

Future

As of the 2016 schedule will be on the weekends regional express trains operating between Frankfurt and Bamberg, driving four times daily in a direct way on the Wern Valley Railway; the journey time to the total distance will be about 2.5 hours. For use to get new trains Bombardier TWINDEXX. Whether the trains will operate on the Wern Valley Railway also intermediate stops, is currently unclear.

Route

South of the station Waigolshausen threaded the Wern Valley Railway from the mainline from Schweinfurt to Wurzburg and leads to the Werntal down. First left, then right to the Wern, the route by Arnstein, where it bends to the southwest. On the southern flank of the route continues to Stetten, where it describes an arc northwest. Shortly after Stetten also leaves up here usually parallel B 26 the Werntal to Karlstadt. From Eußenheim the Wern must be crossed several times before the track in Wernfeld hits the Main-Spessart -Bahn from Würzburg, with which it is not merged, but runs parallel to Gemünden ( Main) because of their turns.
