Werner Gitt

Werner Gitt ( born February 22, 1937 in Uschdeggen, Stallupönen County, East Prussia ) is an author and one of the more well-known representative of creationism in Germany. Before his retirement in 2002, he was Director of the Department of Information Technology of the Department of Science and Technology of cross-cutting issues within the Physikalisch- Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig.

Curriculum vitae

Werner Gitt was born in 1937 in Uschdeggen ( from 1938 Raineck ), a small village in the northeast of East Prussia. After the invasion of the Red Army in January 1945, his older brother Fritz was during the refugee treks westward, first by the Russians, shortly after his mother in the Ukraine, where she died a short time later. When he was expelled by the Poles, Werner Gitt came to West Germany. When his father returned from French captivity, he went with him first in the area of Luechow, later to Westphalia.

From 1963 to 1968 Gitt studied engineering at the Technical University of Hannover, where he graduated as an engineer. He then worked as an assistant at the Institute of Control Engineering, Technical University of Aachen. Here he received his doctorate in 1971, Dr. -Ing. Since 1971, he was Head of the Department of Information Technology at the Physikalisch -Technische Bundesanstalt ( PTB) in Braunschweig, where he was in 1978 appointed director and professor. In this position he left in 2002 to retire.

Since 1966 he has been married to his wife Marion and has two children. Gitt experienced together with his wife during an evangelistic meeting in Braunschweig his conversion and since then is part of the Evangelical Free Church community ( Baptist Church ) " Brunswick Church of Peace ". He is also a member of the Community word study and knowledge and has performed all over Germany on evangelism as a lecturer on. He has written numerous books and his lectures are distributed on cassettes are available as MP3 download from the Internet and are regularly in the Bible Broadcasting Network (Bible Broadcasting Network ) BBN German disseminated through radio and internet live stream.

Gitts statements about information

Measure for comparing high storage densities

1997 suggested Gitt a "new measure for comparing high storage densities ", which he " measure of information density ": call (symbol q). The maximum information density of the DNA molecule of living cells, he estimates it at 1.9 × 1018 Bit/mm3 from; q to be the quotient of the density of information and the present DNA. This ratio is in the technical realization is always smaller than 1, then the current estimate 256 megabit memory about 5 x 10-13.

His understanding of information

Information is for Werner Gitt next matter and energy, the third fundamental size of all technical and biological processes. However, should the Shannon information theory, are Gitt, not applied to the field of biology, since it covers only the statistical level. Thus Gitt sees in statistical processes ( random cuts ) no formation of information. For the complete characterization of information to satisfy a kind of " natural laws for information " ( NGI), the following five aspects are necessary for Gitt:

  • It must mark the substantive representation available (letters, magnetizations on a hard disk, DNA base pairs, sound spectrum). This level of information transfer is called statistics.
  • The characters are arranged according to certain syntactic rules of a grammar
  • From the syntactic structure, the semantics of the message can be tapped by a code. If the code is not known, the NCI do not allow any statement. The coded character on the information carrier must have alternate character: for example, " GGA " in the code system of the genes for a glycine molecule.
  • The information must include a pragmatic aspect. When the sender of the information is present an intention that, if necessary to evoke an action by the recipient. An HTTP request to a server obviously has a transmitter-side pragmatics; the genetic code can be observed at least one receiver-side pragmatics, for he doth in living cells, the synthesis of proteins.
  • The fifth necessary aspect called Gitt " apobetics " (from the Greek αποβαίνοντα: results, success). He is referring to the intended by the sender or the receiver reached the end of the message.

According to his conclusions any information must include a copyright or have the sender specifies the associated code and meaning. However, he stressed that these NCI are falsifiable if one could specify a process in which information that meets all five demands, but beispsielsweise has no sender, arising from the accident. Biological information he is not one of the examples fully known, since their emergence is neither empirically accessible yet been able to be reproduced. Because every piece of information and each code system let traced back to a equipped with creative intelligence copyright by the NCI ( in the examples fully known, it involves people ) and the genetic code in the domain of the NCI lie, and the man must have a creator. Werner Gitt identifies this author after his personal conviction as the God of the Bible.

Criticism

The following objections are provided:

  • Bioinformaticians have already shown that information representing artificial life, can arise from random processes.
  • After Gitts information understanding puts no information in purely statistical processes. The problem is that you can not judge which systems are random and which are not. Gitts answer, this one could only judge from a reliable meta-information ( = information about other system data), does not meet the scientific criteria.
  • His conception of sets of information can only be placed "on the basis of experience," which should also apply to non created by people information. The sentence " Every piece of information comes from intelligent beings " can, according to critics, are purely scientific, not generalized to all information.
  • Furthermore, one can not, without further adaptation in a scientific field considerations from the field of information theory. In information theory, systems contain a teleological component, whereas in the natural sciences, the " objective reality " is described independently of man. Under " Genetic Code " is in genetics a lot of rules understood that describe purely physico- chemical processes are transferred through which DNA structures in protein structures, while in information theory agreements of conscious beings on the use of symbols to replace of messages are in the foreground.

Evangelistic nonfiction

A major concern of Werner Gitt is evangelism, through lectures and books. This appeared especially from the publisher CLV ( Christian literature distribution ) as well as in Haenssler Verlag and are widely used. For example,, the book questions that are asked again and again in 2005 already in the 20th edition; In addition translations are given in 17 languages.

In these books, Gitt treated a large number of subject areas. To what extent he sure has the necessary competence, is controversial; several sections of his books are in the book of Christian books to read critically as illustrative examples used.
