Werner Nachtigall

Werner Nachtigall ( born June 7, 1934 in Saaz, Czechoslovakia ) is a German zoologist and biologist. He is considered one of the founders of bionics in Germany.

Life

After finishing high school in Augsburg he studied at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich natural sciences in the fields of biology, physics, chemistry and geography with Diploma in Technical Biology and Bionics. In 1959 he was rer at Werner Jacobs with a zoological work on a motion physiologically - biophysical issue with bionic importance to Dr.. nat. doctorate. First, he was from 1959 to 1961 research assistant at the Radiobiological Institute in Neuherberg, later at the Zoological Institute of the University of Munich. His research interests at this time already include questions in the field of bionics. In 1966 he completed his habilitation on flight biophysics. There followed in 1967 a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

In 1969 he was appointed as Professor and Director of the Zoological Institute of the University of Saarland. On his initiative, the study program " Technical Biology and Bionics " was introduced in 1990 at the University of Saarland. In 1990 he was co-founder of the Society for Technical Biology and Bionics, to 2003 the first chairman.

After his retirement in 2002, he became head of the BMBF - Competence Network Biomimetics BIOKON at the University of Saarland.

Work

Through his research, among other things, moving mechanisms in the animal kingdom and biostatistics, in which he brought together consistently different scientific and engineering disciplines, he became a pioneer of bionics in Germany. In addition to scientific publications, he has published several popular science books and articles, with which he was able to arouse widespread public interest in this young field of research.

Werner Nachtigall has been active in numerous committees. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. He has published over 300 scientific papers and over 30 books, mostly in the topic of Technical Biology, flight biomechanics and bionics.
