History

1909-1962

Forerunners of the Weser stadium, a sports court with wooden grandstand was built in 1909 by General Bremer gymnastics and sports club. With its new building in 1926, it received its first grand stand, changing rooms and restaurant. The stadium now called ABTS arena and was henceforth used in addition to football games for mass political events. Received its current name the stadium for the first time 1930. Since there also carries the SV Werder Bremen from its games. Also Bremer Sports Club from 1906 to 1963 carried his league games from here. Between 1934 and 1945, the stadium was called Bremer arena and mainly served the Nazi Party. During the Second World War there were three anti-aircraft batteries. From 1945 it was known as IKE stadium and used for American team sports. Since its reopening in 1947, it bears throughout the name " Weser Stadium ".

1963-2007

The Weser Stadium learned in its long history, numerous extensions and conversions or renovations. While new bleachers expanded its capacity, other measures, in particular the conversion of standing on seats, but had the opposite. Therefore, the capacity of the Weser stadium from the 1970s to 2002 tended to be decreasing. There were only following the main construction activities include:

For the first season of the Football League in 1963, the North has just been covered and installed a new floodlights.

In 1965, the curve stands were completed with a top rank, as a reward for the first German football championship by SV Werder Bremen.

In 1978, the North Stand was rebuilt and the floodlight towers built - at that time the strongest illumination of a European football field.

On 6 May 1980, the German Army had 1,200 recruits in the Weser stadium store their solemn vow. The event, which was intended as a festive event to mark the 25-year anniversary of NATO accession, caused great counter-demonstrations by leftist and pacifist groups, which escalated into street battles with the police. Overall, about 10,000 protesters found a to which 250 police officers were injured, the damage to property was also considerable.

In 1992, the Weser Stadium was the first stadium in Germany with boxes.

2006, until then red seats were replaced with green. In two straight lines is on the lower part also since the word " Werder Bremen" to read in white color.

Conversion 2008

Any expansion plans pushed and repeatedly come across numerous protests by the residents. The Pauline Fathers march in the Weser stadium is located, is a sensitive recreation area, on the other side of the street bordering a densely populated residential area on the site. Immediately adjacent to the stadium also limits the Stadionbad ( a popular public indoor and outdoor), two tennis clubs and a sailing club. Since time immemorial, all the inhabitants of the Pauline march have far-reaching say in all change projects in the march. The tennis clubs deny, for example, against the construction of a third high rank, as their training grounds would be shadowed by the greater height of the stadium - building structure and a relocation of the affected places is not an option because of the spatial relationships. The offer to seek a completely new terrain elsewhere, was vehemently rejected. In addition, the tense traffic situation is called as a deterrent, as already stood too few parking spaces available and no new parking space at a reasonable cost could be created.

Initial expansion plans

Existing planning documents stipulated to increase the capacity to 50,000 seats. The floodlights were given way to install under the newly constructed roof with a third upper tier. This should - be equipped with a solar system, with a portion of the energy required may be obtained from solar energy - even after this maximum task plans. The solar surface would 17000-20000 square meters. The costs were estimated at 40 to 50 million euros. In order to achieve a start right conversion, the initiative serves "Pro Weser Stadium " has formed.

On April 12, 2007 in Bremen Baudeputation agreed to an extension of the stadium, which was then also adopted by the Senate of Bremen on 17 April 2007. The start of the renovation work was scheduled for the end of December 2007, the opening of the enlarged venue of the Hanseatic League to be held in August 2008.

Reduction in expansion plans

2008 was adopted by the SV Werder not to hold because of increased costs on other remodeling.

Since May 2009, the Weser stadium was converted into a pure football stadium. The west and the east curve moved closer to the pitch. Around 42,300 people can be seated in the stadium.

Finishing

The expansion began in September 2008 with the covering and milling the roof of the North and South Stand. In December 2008, the roof on the north line was completely covered with photovoltaic elements and could be put into operation. In early January 2009, the last pairs of trusses were installed on the Südgeraden, and it started the installation of the new facade on the Südgeraden, which was completed in late March 2009. The south facade now includes photovoltaic cells to be installed in the West and East Stand. However, this facade made already for new trouble, as it reflects too much and thus the lawns were burned in the Museumsquartier. The fade effect is considered to be extremely disruptive to the visitors who Badaufsichten even see a security risk for the bathers. Shortly before the end of the Bundesliga season 2008/ 09 with the dismantling of the roof of the west curve started. December 31, 2009 then the roof of the new grandstand was installed.

The corresponding conversion of the East Stand began in the summer of 2010.

The " WUSEUM "

Since December 2004, is located in the Weser stadium and the Werder Bremen Museum, briefly called " WUSEUM ". This arose in the course of renovation work on the North Stand. In " WUSEUM " the successes and won title of Werder be issued. So there are to see the championship trophy, the DFB Cup as well as many rare posters, photos and other trophies. In addition, in various exhibitions exceptional players or other members will be honored.

Transport links

The traffic situation around the Weser Stadium and the lack of space on site is always regarded as the biggest shortcoming of the arena. For this reason, circulating again and again rumors of a complete construction of the new stadium elsewhere. The only way there is through the Easter dike, which always leads to massive traffic problems, above all, if the fan - traffic mixes with the usual rush-hour traffic. The situation in the Pauline Marsh permits only very limited expansion measures, such as lack even adequate VIP parking which is quoted as the main reason why Bremen is often overlooked in the staging of international matches. The few parking spaces may only be used by authorized persons with special pass. On match days, the streets around the stadium are widely blocked, only residents are allowed to pass with their cars. For Fans arriving is in addition to the usual stop " Weser Stadium " of the Bremen tram an extensive shuttle system, which combines a variety of free parking with the stadium. In addition, there since 2009 - unique in the Bundesliga - a Journey by ship. Immediately behind the stadium, an investor has been built, which is operated in regular service at regular intervals and a comfortable and cozy Check possible.
