West Berkshire

West Berkshire is a unitary authority in the county of Berkshire. The council is based in Newbury; significant sights are Hungerford and Thatcham.

The local authority was established on 1 April 1974 as a District Newbury and was born from the merger of the Borough Newbury, the Rural Districts Bradfield, Hungerford and Newbury and part of the Wantage Rural District. As the County of Berkshire was disbanded on 1 April 1998, the District received the status of a unitary authority and is now called West Berkshire.
