West Caribbean Airways

West Caribbean Airways was a regional airline based in Medellín, Colombia. The main base was the Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport ( EOH ) in Medellin.

History

The airline was founded in 1998 and started operations on in 2000. It was founded by the Colombian Hassan Tannir and was originally located on San Andres Iceland. Hassan Tannir sold the airline to an investor group from Medellín who in 2001 moved the headquarters of the airline to Medellin.

On Aruba and Costa Rica had West ( new brand name) two subsidiary airlines.

Because of the incidents listed below had West cease flying in 2005.

Incidents

  • On 26 March 2005, West Caribbean Airways aircraft of type Let L -410 hit the hill near the runway of Providencia on Old Providence Iceland. The existing of 2 pilot crew and 6 of the 12 passengers died. A report suggested a technical error.
  • On August 16, 2005, West Caribbean Airways jet crashed on the flight from Panama to Martinique in the West of Venezuela with 152 passengers on board from, see Chronicle of aviation catastrophes in 2001 until 2010.
