The West Coast Highway is a main road in Perth in the southeast of the Australian state of Western Australia. It combines the Curtin Avenue in Swanbourne along the coast with the Marmion Avenue in Trigg. The road is designated as a state road 71 ( S71) and carries some sections the term tourist route 204 ( T204 ). Means that it connects Fremantle with the northern suburbs of Perth. The speed limit is generally 80 km / h In residential areas it has dropped to 60-70 km / h. Most of the route is running four lanes with center crossing the road.

Course

The West Coast Highway begins at Curtin Avenue ( S71) in Swanbourne, a western suburb of Perth, on the coast of the Indian Ocean. He heads north, past the Campbell Barracks of the SAS, according to City Beach, Scarborough and Trigg. He ends at the Karrinyup Road and Marmion Avenue is to ( S71).

History

In the 1940s, the highway was ( called Coast Road ) between Swanbourne and North Beach, a narrow coastal road. Before, the settlements on the coast, such as North Beach and Mullaloo to achieve from just over dirt roads of the Wanneroo Road. End of the 1960s, this small coastal road has been significantly expanded and extended until after Mullaloo Beach.

The mid- 1970s, the section was realigned by City Beach, so the earlier Challenger Drive ( inland ) and the West Coast Highway ran ( on the coast ) to Scarborough on the same route. The southernmost stretch by Swanbourne was renamed in Rochdale Road. 1984 Highway was extended north to the Ocean Reef Road.

At that time the Marmion Avenue had already displaced the West Coast Highway north as the main road to the port de suburbs and the suburban Swanbourne had his problems with the through traffic. In the years 1985/1986, shortly before the expulsion of the new system of state highways, the highway was just north of Scarborough led inland to its present route to reach the Marmion Avenue at the Karrinyup Road. And the stretch south of City Beach was diverted to Servetus Road in Swanbourne.

The northern two-thirds of the highway were divided and received new names:

  • West Coast Drive from Trigg to Hepburn Avenue and Hillary Boat Harbour
  • Whitfords Avenue to With Ford's Avenue (east-west )
  • North Shore Drive to Mullaloo Drive
  • Oceanside Promenade to the Ocean Reef Road

With the exception of the track in Scarborough all sections were continuous.

By the year 2000, Servetus Road developed to precisely such a bottleneck as the Rochdale Road before 1985. A new stretch of the West Coast Highway was born in a ditch (because of noise protection for residents ) right next to the Servetus Street, the normal to a local link road was downgraded. The Curtin Avenue to Fremantle has also been expanded.
