West German presidential election, 1989

In the election for President of Germany in 1989, Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker was re-elected by the 9th Federal Assembly on 23 May 1989. He received the necessary majority with 881 of 1022 votes (108 against, 30 abstentions) in the first ballot. The absence of other nominations was the first and only time, only one candidate for election. Weizsäcker had acquired especially with his speech on the 40th anniversary of the war's end on 8 May 1985 respect.

The last presidential election before that date still unpredictable fall of the Wall on 9 November 1989 took place as the 1949, 1974, 1979 and 1984 in Bonn. Since the reunification of Germany meets the Federal Assembly, as previously from 1954 to 1969, again in Berlin.
