Westerhever

Westerhever (Danish: Vesterhever ) is a municipality in the district of North Friesland Schleswig -Holstein.

Geography and transport

Westerhever is located on the northwestern tip of the peninsula Eiderstedt. The lighthouse Westerheversand is the landmark of the place and the whole peninsula eiderstedt and surrounded by protected salt marshes.

The salt meadows with the lighthouse and the upstream high Westerheversand sand beach with his subject each year to some 80,000 visitors.

History

Westerhever was once an island. It was settled in the 12th century. The first people built large Dorfwarften as Sieversbüll, Leikenhusen or Stufhusen and protect the economy in the island with a ring dike.

With the large Mandränke ( storm surge ) of 1362 the first church was destroyed by 1123.

The present brick church of St. Stephen, consisting of over previously greatly reduced ship from the 1804 and the 1370 -built Gothic tower together with the restaurant Kirchspielkrug, is the sole center of the village.

In the center of the village lies the Wogemannsburg, a mound, on the 1362-1370 survived the so-called Wogemänner. These operated piracy, but also plundered the surrounding villages. The Wogemänner were from 1370 Staller Owe herring and conquered the inhabitants of the area. The castle was destroyed and their stones used to strengthen the Church and for the construction of the church tower.

In westerhever many Haubarge are still preserved. On one of these Haubarge, the Siekhof, came in 1860, Jacob Albert, called the painter of the holms, to the world. His final resting he found in the cemetery of westerhever.

Municipal council

Of the seven seats in the municipal council voters Community BGW has since the municipal election 2008, four seats and the voter community DGW three. In the local elections on May 26, 2013, were no changes. The turnout was 73.7 percent.

Mayor

For the election period 2013-2018 Olaf Dircks ( BGW) was elected mayor. He succeeds Roland Reckziegel, who was from 2008-2013 in office.

Salt marshes

The salt marshes between sandbar and sea wall are now 246 acres in size and have expanded in recent years. The first measurement of a three -hectare area is from 1887.
