Western Union Telegraph Building

The Western Union Telegraph Building ( shortened Western Union Building called ) was a high-rise building in New York City. Its height of 70 meters seems comparatively small from today's perspective, but it was from 1875 to 1883, the highest skyscraper in the world. It towered over the six years earlier built Fettes College in Scotland by 10 yards and became the first skyscraper in New York, which could take the title of " tallest building in the world " claim for themselves. In 1899, immediately adjacent to the Western Union Building, the Park Row Building significantly higher.

The building was used by the telecommunications company Western Union as the head office and central office, which employed there telephone operators worked in shifts around the clock. The Western Union Building was in use until 1912. After two years of vacancy, it was demolished in 1914 to build on the same spot the corporate headquarters of AT & T, but is no longer there today.
