Westerwolde

Westerwolde is the easternmost part of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands and is located on the border with Germany.

By the end of the 16th century it was an independent glory of the Holy Roman Empire. End of the 16th century, the city of Groningen bought the glory of Westphalia. Since 1618 Westerwolde is an official part of the Groningen country. Even today, one knows the historic area yet.

In the 14th century Westerwolde was no more than a collection of widely scattered villages and small settlements in a largely inaccessible bog, the bog Bourtanger. Today, a little of this bog has been preserved only in the village Sellingen. In the course of work on the museum and fortress town Bourtange but large areas are waterlogged back there.
