Westminster Cathedral

The Westminster Cathedral ( Westminster Cathedral) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster and the main church of England and Wales. She wears the patronal feast of the Holy Blood.

This Roman Catholic Church is not to be confused with the Anglican Westminster Abbey, the coronation church of the British royal family.

History

Since the British royal family had separated the church in the country of Rome ( Church of England ), there were 300 years no Roman Catholic churches in England. Only in the 19th century established themselves again Roman Catholic communities. Archbishop Wiseman (1802-1865) began with the collection of donations for the construction of a new cathedral. But it was only in 1895 he was able to be started. The cathedral was opened in 1903.

Building

The church was built according to plans by John Francis Bentley in neo-Byzantine style. From the outside the building has the elaborate facade of red brick alternating with white Portland stone, the high dome, not least due to the completely atypical for these widths Campanile ( freestanding bell tower ). Inside they surprised by the room effect - wide nave hall, narrow aisles, behind separate side chapels - and especially by the mosaics on walls and ceilings, which were, however, still not quite finished. These and the ciborium over the high altar are intended echoes of early Christian Roman basilicas.

Organ

The organ on the west gallery of Westminster Cathedral was built between 1922-1932 by Henry Willis & Sons and in 1984 and 1996 overtaken by Harrison and Harrison and extensively restored. In this case, the original pneumatic actions were replaced with electro-pneumatic tracker action. In addition to the swell organ, the Choir organ and the organ solo are swellable.
