Wetlands International

The organization was founded in 1954 as the International Wildfowl Inquiry with original focus on the protection of waterfowl. Later it was renamed the International Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Bureau ( IWRB ), whereby the topic of wetlands held its way into her name.

Other organizations with similar goals later emerged in Asia and America, including the Asian Wetland Bureau ( AWB ) ( founded in 1983 as INTERWADER ) and the resulting 1989 Wetlands for the Americas (WA). 1991 initiated these three organizations cooperate closely. In 1995, they merged and formed the Wetlands International.

Currently Wetlands International works in 15 national offices, the additional headquarters in Wageningen in the Netherlands. 150 people work for the organization, about 1,000 people are organized in a so-called specialist groups and 15,000 volunteers deliver Wetlands International, among others, with observation data.
