Wewak

Wewak ( dt: Dallmannhafen ) is a port city in northern Papua New Guinea and with 19,724 inhabitants (as of 2000) is the largest city and capital of the province of East Sepik.

Economy and Transport

Important for the economy of the harbor, which plays an important role in the foreign trade of the province. Further down the harbor from time to time on cruise ships. From there the tourists are taken to river trips on the Sepik. From Wewak small airport there are daily connections to Port Moresby, Madang and Mount Hagen. Road connections inland province Wewak East Sepik connect with the settlements on the Sepik River Angoram, Timbunke and Pagui.

History

Near the town is Cape Wom, where on September 13, 1945, the Japanese army surrendered to the Australians. In Wewak, the first two held under the Australian Directed war crimes trials took place in New Guinea. In both cases, it was about cannibalism. In one method, there was a verdict of guilty with death sentence, the other defendant was acquitted.
