Whitecross (Falkirk)

White Cross is a village on the eastern edge of the Scottish Unitary Authority Falkirk. It is located about nine kilometers east of Falkirk and 24 kilometers west of Edinburgh. The nearest town is three kilometers away Linlithgow, West Lothian. The creek Manuel Burn, which flows east into the border river Avon, Whitecross affected in the south. South of the town runs from the 19th century to the Union Canal. The Avon Aqueduct which carries the canal over the Avon, is listed in the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A.

History

In the 12th century a Cistercian monastery was founded at the location of today's Whitecross. Probably in the early 15th century, the L-shaped tower house " Almond Castle", which was extended in the following century was born. In the 1780s Almond Castle was already left and now few remains of the castle are still standing.

In the 20th century Whitecross developed in connection with the coal mining and coal upgrading. The population numbers have been declining since mid-century. Lived in 1961 1153 inhabitants in Whitecross, so still 819 persons were counted as part of the 2001 census.
