Whitworth Art Gallery

The Whitworth Art Gallery is an art museum and exhibition building in Manchester, England.

History

The establishment of the museum was in 1889, after among others, the English Industrial Sir Joseph Whitworth had made a donation for Whitworth Institute and Park. The construction of the original building was begun in 1894, the museum was inaugurated in 1908. Architects were J. and J. W. Beaumont. An extension of the exhibit space for to this day figured to 55,000 exhibits from the collections took place in 1995 by the installation of a mezzanine floor in the center of the building. This extension has received an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 2014, an additional increase of the rooms to be completed at twice the previous area and simultaneously carried out a connection to the Whitworth Park.

Since 1958, the University of Manchester is responsible for the operation and organization of the museum.

Collections

The holdings of the Whitworth Art Gallery include both works. British artists such as William Turner, Ford Madox Brown, Richard Payne Knight, John Martin and William Blake, as well as by artists of classical modernism, such as Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. In addition, the Gallery focuses on modern artists such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Eduardo Paolozzi, David Hockney, Georges Adéagbo, Francis Bacon and Antoni Tàpies. The gallery has the arising in the years 1929 to 1931 marble sculpture Genesis by Jacob Epstein.
